Comics
The French artist was born in 1947 and his birth name is Herve Barulea. He started drawing at the age of thirty and made his debut in “Pilote”. His first album “Quéqette Blues” published in 1985 soon became a reference. Influenced by Reiser’s humor and Munoz’s expressionist line, he forged a personal style in stories that deal with tough and controversial social issues. He has published numerous graphic novels, among which the awarded Euro-manga “L'Autoroute du Soleil” (1995).

Marco Corona
Comics
One of the most significant artists of his generation, Corona was born in 1967. He publishes his underground work in many magazines and fanzines and has published many albums such as “Frida Kahlo”, a biography of the great Mexican painter, which introduced Corona to a wider audience and got excellent reviews.

Gipi

Born in 1963, Gianni Pacinotti (Gipi) started out illustrating for publishing houses and advertising companies. Since 1992, he has published comics in magazines and has regularly illustrated for “La Republica”. Several of his graphic novels have been published in France and the U.S. as well. His more recent work includes video and animation short films.

Joe Sacco
Comics
Born in 1960 in Malta, Sacco studied journalism in Oregon, made comics for numerous magazines and founded his own magazine “Portland Permanent Press”. The series “Yahoo” depicts his experience from traveling around Europe. He is unique in having invented the genre of comics-journalism. After traveling to many war-zones of the world for research, he has drawn his impressions in dense lines and detailed story-telling. His graphic novels include “Palestine” and “Footnotes in Gaza” about Middle East, as well as “Stories from Bosnia” and “Safe Area: Gorazde” about former Yugoslavia.

Marjane Satrapi
Comics
Satrapi was born in 1969 and grew up in Tehran until the age of fourteen, when she was sent to Vienna by her parents in order to flee the Iranian regime. Later on she moved to Strasbourg to study Fine Arts. She achieved world-wide fame with “Persepolis”, her autobiographical graphic novel (four volumes), in which through the story of her left-wing, bourgeois family, she tells the turbulent story of her country, including the fall of the Shah and the Iran–Iraq War. “Persepolis” was also made into an animation film. Satrapi was a guest at this year’s festival.
